Zusammen mit den Eltern und Geschwistern fährt Gustav auf der SS München los und erreicht am 2. Juli, 1923 Ellis Island. Angekommen in New York sprach er kein Wort Englisch, nur Deutsch und Ungarisch, beginnt Gustav sein neues Leben und lässt sein altes hinter sich. Ohne auch nur ein Wort Englisch zu tritt Gustav ab dem Zeitpunkt, in welchem er den ersten Fuß von dem Schiff setzt, sein neues Leben an. Nach einer kurzen Einlebungsphase nutzte er die Möglichkeit und begann seine Künstlerkarriere mit dem Besuch des Art Institute of Chicago (1924-1934), der Art Instruction School of Minneapolis (1926-1928) und der Carl Schurz High School (1927-1929).
